But what we know are the external results such as turning active gradually and living a longer, healthier, and more productive life. However, who all really knows what happens in BTS? What’s happening in that space inside our body when we squat or pull the bars?

So, we’ve tried asking a few gym experts as well as some real good physiotherapists and tried gisting out the common grounds each one of them meets. So you ready to uncover some unknown facts about your body, or shall I say some mechanisms your body has been upgrading itself into?

Let’s Uncover Some Truth…

1.    Muscles (Muscle Growth)

When working out at the gym, your body is working hard to contract your muscles and create movement. In order to do this, it needs energy in the form of glucose. Glucose is a type of sugar that the body stores away from the foods we eat in the form of glycogen.

During bodybuilding workouts, your body will begin to use up this stored glycogen for energy, leading to muscle growth and weight gain. Additionally, certain exercises are designed specifically to promote muscle development and the evolution of lean muscle mass.

The body requires some extra amount of oxygen to create more ATP when working out. Hence, blood is pumped to the exercising muscles to deliver that additional oxygen. Without enough oxygen, lactic acid will start forming. Lactic acid is flushed from the body within 30 to 60 minutes after finishing a workout. This is why it’s important to warm up before a workout and to take frequent intervals so that your body has the time to recover and produce more oxygen.

While muscle growth is one of the main goals of many gym-goers, there are also various other benefits to regular workouts. These can include increased weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, greater flexibility and range of motion, and better mental health.

2.    Lungs

Why do you think you automatically breathe faster when you are working out? Or maybe trekking? Or perhaps when engaged in any outdoor sports?

The reason is that “your body needs 15 times more oxygen”, by K J Parkins (1) than normal times when you are at rest. When you are working out at the gym, your breathing rate will increase until the muscles surrounding the lungs can’t move any faster. This whole capacity of oxygen use is called VO2 max (Teeraphan Sangkaew, Kasem Pantuso, Chawapong Metheethammawat (2). The higher the VO2 max, the more fit a person is.

So, what happens to your lungs when you are working out at the gym? Your breathing rate increases as you engage in muscle-building workouts or other bodybuilding workouts. This results in increased oxygen being delivered to your muscles, helping them grow and gain weight. Additionally, as your VO2 max increases, your body becomes more efficient at utilizing oxygen, allowing you to strain yourself harder and longer during your workouts.

If you are looking to improve your fitness and build muscle, it is important to focus on workouts that can help increase your VO2 max. This might include exercising at a high intensity for shorter periods, such as doing short cardio intervals or lifting weights with short rest periods in between sets.

3.    Heart

During your workouts to gain weight or lose weight, your heart muscle undergoes some changes. Just like any other muscle in the body, your heart muscle grows stronger with exercise. This increased muscle mass allows your heart to pump more blood with each beat and better circulate oxygen throughout your body.

Your heart rate also increases during workouts. This is because your body requires more oxygen to power your muscle movements, and the increase in muscle mass allows your heart to meet this demand. Additionally, as you continue to exercise over time, your heart muscle becomes more efficient at pumping blood throughout your body.

4.    Brain

As you head to the gym or lace up your running shoes, your brain is busy making changes to prepare for your workout. Increased blood flow brings oxygen and other nutrients to your muscles during bodybuilding workouts, boosting their growth and repair. At the same time, muscle contractions release neurotransmitters that help improve mood and focus. And the benefits of exercise don’t stop when you finish your workout. Regular physical activity can help protect your brain from age-related decline and improve cognitive function.

So what happens to your brain when you are gymming?

During a workout, your brain works hard to keep you motivated. As you start to exercise, increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, helping them grow and repair. 5.    Kidneys

When working out intensely, your kidneys go into overdrive to help keep you hydrated. They filter more blood and reabsorb more water, resulting in less urine output. This is their way of helping your body maintain optimal hydration levels.

In addition, when you are lifting weights and growing muscle, your kidneys play an important role in regulating the body’s protein levels. They help filter out excess protein from your bloodstream, which helps prevent a buildup of harmful waste products in your muscles.

6.    Adrenal Glands

8.    Joints
